Here is his thoughts on the new IBM BI tool : Cognos Insight.
' On March 7th, IBM officially released the highly anticipated personal analytics tool Cognos Insight. Cognos Insight is a desktop BI tool for business and IT people alike. It allows you to quickly analyze, visualize and explore you data. But not only that, Cognos Insight also invites you to perform detailed what-if analysis and rapid prototyping. But let’s start from the beginning.
Rapid time to analysis
Cognos Insight is a desktop tool. The installation is quick and easy. Once the application is open, you can acquire data in two different ways: drag a file into the workspace or connect to a Cognos 10 or ODBC data source. This takes just a few seconds and the tool will analyze the data structure in the background and will automatically create a multi-dimensional view (advanced users have the option to perform advanced data-mapping as well). Once you have loaded your data, you can get started with exploring and analyzing the data set.
Analysis and visualization
Analyzing and exploring data is really easy. You can quickly re-arrange views by dragging and dropping dimensions. Data is automatically visualized. The first version of the tool provides a robust library of useful charts. Users can quickly customize visualizations by using a drop-down menu of options. Updates to graphs and the data happens lightening fast – Cognos Insight is based on the ubiquitous IBM Cognos TM1 in-memory technology.
There are a lot of different tools users can choose for the analysis: traffic-lighting, calculations and interactive filtering (so-called Explore Points).
What-if analysis
Being able to analyze and explore data is one thing. But most BI tools are limited to do just that. This is where Cognos Insight is different. You have the ability to perform what-if analysis and to also develop prototypes of dashboards, reports and planning templates. This is facilitated by write-back capabilities. Users have the option to insert data elements and to also create custom calculations.
Let’s say I am reviewing the performance of my French business unit. The performance is looking great, but I want to find out what would happen if sales dropped by 10%. This is easy to do. Take a look at the screenshots below. By the way, there are a lot of really cool and powerful techniques for entering data: shortcuts (such as g10…grow the existing data by 10%) or spreading techniques (“use the seasonality profile from last year”). Write back opens the door for sophisticated scenario modeling. This is obviously just a simple example.
Prototyping & Planning
Being able to perform write-back also opens up the ability to leverage Cognos Insight as a powerful prototyping tool that can be used by IT and the business alike. Imagine, the marketing department needs a new sales pipeline dashboard. They can quickly load their data into the tool, create visualizations and assemble a working prototype of their desired dashboard. IT can then take this asset and turn it into a fully automated and sanctioned solution. You can use the same method to develop prototypes for planning, budgeting and forecasting templates. This is extremely powerful as business and IT can easily collaborate on developing solutions rather than wasting time arguing over requirements documents and not understanding each other.

Aligning IT & Business
It is extremely important to collaborate and secure data. Cognos Insight provides various powerful options for that. Cognos 10 customers are able to share the work that they have done with other users. Existing security can therefore be applied. Also, TM1 users are able to leverage the work and incorporate it directly in new or existing TM1 applications (e.g. planning, budgeting, forecasting etc..). It is also possible to save the work in a .cdd file.
Resources
Cognos Insight is extremely powerful. The combination of analysis, visualization, what-if and prototyping capabilities make it an amazing tool. It is easy to use and really fun to work with data.
